FOUR WAYS TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST

Do you find it difficult to make it through your day without feeling sleepy? You are not alone. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three American adults are not getting the 7 hours of recommended sleep each night. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society warns that people who do get enough sleep are more likely to suffer from several chronic conditions.

If you worry you are not sleeping enough, try these four tips to get a better night’s rest.

SLEEP BETTER AND FEEL BETTER WITH THESE FOUR TIPS

  • Your bedroom is not a movie theater. Try to remove all electronic devices like TVs and tablets from your bedroom. At least turn off your phone if you don’t use your device as an alarm so no one will disturb you at night. Try to give yourself 30 to 60 minutes of screen-free time before you go to sleep.
  • Stick to a sleep schedule. Help maintain your body’s sleep and wake cycle by going to bed and getting up at the same time — yes, even on the weekends. When you change your sleep pattern, it can take days before your body adjusts.
  • Learn to relax your body. Things like exercise, caffeine and stress can play havoc with your sleep. Don’t exercise 3 to 4 hours before you plan to sleep and avoid consuming caffeine within 8 hours of bedtime. Meditation or listening to music is a great way to lower your stress levels.
  • Transform your bedroom into your sanctuary. Create a clean and relaxing environment. Keep incense and scented candles out of your bedroom if you are sensitive to smells. Block out annoying noises by using a white noise generator and make sure the room isn’t too bright.
